## Caleb & The Apple Tree

Do you like fruits? I sure do love fruits. So, just the other day I saw Caleb open his hands to a tree and said, 'Excuse me Mr. Apple tree, give me a fruit.' Lol! Kids and their wild imagination.

To my surprise, the tree began to shake as though it heard the boy's request. In a few seconds, it seemed like the tree began to shake downwards toward the ground. It was as though it was sending a message to the soil. No sooner had that happened than the ground began to move up and down.

I opened my eyes wide open to see what was going on in the soil because it seemed like a lot was happening in the ground. Unfortunately, I couldn't see what was happening in the soil. No matter how hard I tried to look, I couldn't see a single thing.

A few seconds later, I saw the ground send a vibration to the tree, and it began to shake again. Like a miracle, it produced a fruit and gave Caleb. The boy went away rejoicing as he got a response from the tree.

Did that actually happen? Well, I was just trying to paint a picture of full stack web development. Let's see the essence behind the story.

## The Tree, The Ground & The Boy - The Front-End, The Back-End & The User

Have you ever visited [google](https://www.google.com)? A lot of people have. What did you last do there? I recently searched for **What is cheese?** I got a lot of information about cheese.

### A Break Down Of My Search

Firstly, I opened my web browser and typed **google.com**. After that, I saw a very attractive single page with a title called **Google**. Below the title, I saw a search field. Below it, I saw a button called **search**.

Secondly, I simply typed *What is Cheese?* Remember how Caleb asked the tree for a fruit? This time I asked google about cheese. After that, I clicked the search button. Google seemed to start spinning. Remember how the tree shook? Google shook with a spin. It seemed like it was sending a request somewhere. Remember how it seemed like the tree sent a request to the soil? Google did exactly that. Remember how I opened my eyes wide to see what was happening in the soil, but couldn't see anything? I attempted to see what google was doing behind the spinning, unfortunately I couldn't see a single thing.

Thirdly, Google said to me, 'Your search results are...' Remember how the boy got a fruit he requested for? In the same way, I got all the information I wanted about cheese.

### The Tree Is The Front-End

The part of the website that you are able to *see and talk to or interact with*, is the famous **front-end**. Remember how the boy talked to the tree? It's similar to how you talk to Google or any other website (front-end).

### The Ground (Soil) Is The Back-End

The part of the website, you are not able to see or interact with, is the famous **back-end**. Remember how I was trying to look at what was happening in the soil but saw nothing? It's similar to what happens when we search for something online. We see a loading status, but we don't know what happens behind the scenes (back-end).

### The Boy Is The User

The person who talk or interacts with the front-end is the user. Remember how the boy talked to the tree? Similarly, that's you before Google or any other web application making some requests.

## A Challenge For You

Hey! Before we call it a day. What would happen if the tree was uprooted from the ground? Would the boy have gotten the fruit? No? You are right. The tree depends on the soil. So, what do you think would happen to a website if it was disconnected from the back-end (the part that does something while Google says *loading...*) Would Google or any other web application work the way it's supposed to work? NO!

Congratulation's. Friend, you are super sharp. And guess what? You have just comprehended what full-stack web development is.

## Before We Say Goodbye Today

**What is full-stack web development?** It's simply learning how to build the seen (front-end) and the unseen (back-end) parts of a website which work hand in hand. Like the tree and the soil. Are you interested in becoming a person that can do this kind of work? Yes! Awesome! Then you are going to be both a *front-end* and *back-end* web developer also known as a **full-stack web developer**.

So, join me next time and I will tell you about all the tools that you will need to get started with this journey. Am super excited. Let's meet next time in Hello! Mr. FullStack. Also, you can watch the video to see this lesson in motion. [Click here](https://youtu.be/jLiDeAN1evk).
